THE EAGLE’S QUILL

St. John’s Newsletter : October, 2011

”. . . Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” Isaiah 40:31

We are a church community rooted in Anglican traditions and committed to sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ through faith, prayer, compassion, and encouragement.

Dear Precious St. John Family,
I am hoping we all enjoyed a few drops of rain in September. Camp Allen had a rain storm when I was here for IONA and Little Church Club. It was really a treat to wake up with the sound of thunder and then rain. Everything was so clean and fresh—yes then the humidity really set in.
Have you ever thought about a church family just like our own family? People we are very fond of and would love to see every day of the week and others we are glad there is only one day to attend church—but nonetheless—they are family whether blood or church. And as family we learn Uncle Bill tells the same stories over and over and over; Aunt Ethel has very bad breath; Granny Jones has the meanest things to say about people—yet we would never think of nor can we “leave our family”—you know churches are the same way—I have been praying about our parish family lately as a few family members seem to be having a hard time with one another—let’s all pray for one another in our ability to love as a family and get past the things we don’t like—we need to remember Christ gave His life for us and though we continue to sin daily we need to try very hard to love one another—the very clear rule Christ did leave us with.
We are all bodies in the body of the church and if just one part of the membership is missing through hurt or anger or dislike or upset we are all hurting. Please let’s consider forgiving our brothers and sisters and begin to consider our gifts—we each have a gift and with that gift we must minister.
Are you a gifted usher—then your ministry is Ushering? Is yours leadership—perhaps it is your turn to lead on the Vestry? Think about Sue, it is so obvious her Ministry is music—we are so blessed to have such a music ministry because she shares those talents with us. So what is your ministry? It is the time of year to consider your time, and tithe and talents—we need all three to keep our blessed St. Johns floating along.
Let’s have a blessed October and please let’s remember to love our neighbor despite our differences. Jesus didn’t tell us we only had to love the lovable ones, you know !!

Love,
Pastor Wendy

P.S. Come have fun with your animals when we celebrate The Blessing of The Animals.

As part of ECF’s efforts to assist congregations in developing leadership and financial resources, they are offering webinars for clergy and lay parish leaders. There is no cost to participate and all are welcome.
Topics will include vestry leadership, capital campaigns, endowments, and planned giving. Some of the topics are: Setting Up a Planned Giving Program for Your Parish; Sound Practices for Vestry Leaders and more. These are very informative and would be helpful to all congregations.

VESTRY MEETING REPORT
St. John’s Vestry Updates
A Summary of Matters Discussed and Actions Taken during recent Vestry Meetings
Vestry meetings are well attended and are started in Prayer both for the meeting and also for members of our parish family as well as our wider community. Items discussed in recent meetings are bulleted below:
Discussion continued after vestry retreat to focus on church vision and mission work. Mary McGregor from EDOT available to assist.
Election of new vestry members to be moved to October 30, 2011. Mike Meyer and Weezie Burton are the vestry nominating committee. This will allow new vestry members a bit of time to transition alongside the departing vestry members. New members will also be able to observe the budgeting process for 2012. The Vestry will be increased to 6 members so two are elected each year.
Little Church Club – Focus on new church membership with suggestions of nametags, checklists, “elevator” speech, and possibly signage to catch the attention of prospective members
The Northwest Convocation Clericus will be held October 6, 2011. ECW has graciously offered to work on a menu and kitchen help to support this event.
ECW Craft Fair will be held November 5, 2011
Blessing of the Animals will be held on October 22, 2011 and will be a joint service with the Methodist, and Presbyterian churches.
The liturgical calendar for 2012 is in work – Jean Trice and Weezie Burton are helping with this.
Wendy received letter of resignation from Molly Walker. She will no longer serve in the Treasurer capacity.
Received Annual letter from the Bishops’ office with regard to the Diocesan and Mission assessment. The Diocesan assessment has been reduced by $1,500 based on average church attendance and pledges, however, the mission assessment appears to have increased. We will seek clarification as well as investigate to see if we can apply the mission assessment for Marlin/Falls county mission outreach
Bobby Peterson has trained Polly Brown on the sound system; as previously recorded, we would also like to train Mike Ferda and John Hall. Also need to see if we can somehow train someone on the recording of the church services for shut-ins.
Bobby Peterson will call Rodney Krumnow regarding the timer for the sprinkler system. The timing of the sprinklers seems to need adjustment. Weezie to provide Bobby with Rodney’s phone number.
With the resignation of Molly Walker; Polly Brown was elected Treasurer.
Utility carrier investigation. Mike and Polly reported that they are still awaiting for analysis from an additional carrier. Mike and Polly were appointed to make the decision on behalf of the vestry.
Kairos Ministry support – Kairos will be here at St. John’s October 8th for training and will return November 9th – 12th for their ministry at the Hobby unit here in Marlin.
Church maintenance checklist – Molly Walker had created a checklist of what maintenance needed to be completed and the timeline of that maintenance. We need to check with Molly and revisit the checklist at vestry meetings.
Discussion and implementation of Usher duties – Roles and responsibility of ushers will expand to working the sound system (when needed) and understanding the thermostats in the church.
Stewardship – Mark Patterson graciously volunteered to facilitate the 2011 stewardship campaign. Need letter and pledge cards sent out NLT next week with deadline for return on 10/23/2011.
Vestry minutes will be edited by Wendy Huber for publication in the monthly newsletter.
